Chris Wilmer

  • Associate Professor, William Kepler Whiteford Faculty Fellow

Prof. Wilmer directs the "Hypothetical Materials Lab" where new materials are generated using a variety of computational algorithms and then their properties are predicted using molecular simulation techniques (among other methods). Our group is among many who find machine learning / artificial intelligence exciting for accelerating materials discovery. In the past we have used these strategies to design new metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for improved vehicular energy storage (e.g., for methane and hydrogen gas), for building advanced electronic-noses, and for designing better carbon capture membranes. In addition to the research efforts, our lab also is highly supportive of students making amazing scientific artwork and also students that pursue entrepreneurial ambitions. Prof. Wilmer has already helped launch two student-led startup companies already, NuMat Technologies and Aeronics, and is presently advising several students who are in the middle of launching their companies.
